Getting the most out of your wardrobe

A few months ago whilst away on a trip with P&G to Brussels and I was surprised to learn that the average person wears 20% of their wardrobe 80% of the time, which means there are so many items that simply don’t get worn. I thought I would share what I do every season to help increase the amount of my wardrobe I actually wear

1. Try things on and make sure everything still fits
Even if I think I haven’t put on weight or lost weight I like to try everything on to make sure it still fits how I want it to and to insure I still like it once it is on.

2. Keep everything clean and ironed
I try not to wash my clothes every time I wear them unless I need to, which means occasionally a stain will go unnoticed back into my wardrobe meaning that the next time I want to wear it I can’t. I like to go through and very carefully check everything is clean and well ironed. Whilst away in Brussels I also learnt that it’s important to use a product that is kind to your clothes but will remove stains as throughly as possible which is why I have been opting for Ariel as it uses FibreScience to clean but look after my clothes as well. I’ve also been reaching for Lenor because it smells amazing and that always makes me want to wear my clothes!

3. Plan go-to-outfits for every item
This is easier said than done and I don’t end up with an exact outfit but I make sure that there is something in my wardrobe to make an outfit with every piece, otherwise there is no way that it will get wear.

4. Stop saving things for best
I understand why people save things for best but I think it should be done only in moderation, I’m not suggesting you wear a prom dress to the corner shop but wear that designer dress for date night every now and then, to really get the most wear out of all your clothes.

5. Turn your hanger the wrong way around
This isn’t just to be a nuisance but it’s a tip I heard recently and I think it’s a great idea which I am going to try! Once you wear the item you turn it back the right way and that way you will find out exactly what items you simply don’t wear. You can then decide to make an effort to wear them or simply get rid of them.

I’m off to reorganise my wardrobe this evening so let me know your tips in the comments, it going to be a long night…

I started sorting out my clothes today (Perfect Sunday task) and im slowly getting there with organising it all. I always say I want a capsule wardrobe, but getting it all sorted is what I need to tackle first.

Just last month, I did a massive wardrobe cull, donated 5 huge bags worth and then sold some on eBay. I was able to make enough funds to buy new quality, staple pieces that just totally work and will be able to be used multi-seasonally – my new uncluttered wardrobe has seriously changed my mornings, as I just have the things I love so I can dress and go without thinking! I grabbed tips and ideas from unfancy.com – she's the flipping queen of capsule wardrobes πŸ™‚ x

I've been slowly selling and donating items out of my closet. It is so freeing!

    Thanks for the tips.

I totally see myself in those 20 and 80 percent, but just can't get the courage to actually throw some stuff away. Really liked the hanger tip, I'll definitely try it:).

Yep, I am definitely in camp wear only 20% of my wardrobe. I am very guilty of 'saving' things but I'm trying hard not too! The main issue I have I think, is the planning. I will more often than not, just grab an outfit I've worn before because I know it works and I am (always) running late and don't have time to think about it. I need one of those wardrobe simulator programs like Cher did in Clueless.

Turning your hanger the other way round sounds interesting and would definitely make me realise what I need to be wearing more of! Great tips!

Lovely post! I totally agree with the "Stop saving" bit. I feel as though it is easy to never wear or use something because you are reserving it, then a weirdness kind of goes around that item and it feels almost untouchable, haha. I say wear it if it makes you feel fabulous, ditch it if it doesn't.

Awesome post!! I particularly agree with the last two ideas. I’m always saving things for best and what a great idea to turn a coat hanger around when you have worn that item. My top tip would be to put the things you don’t wear as much but want to in an attention-grabbing place so when you open your wardrobe you will be drawn to those items πŸ™‚ xx

Could not agree more, especially when it comes to wearing your special items on "non special" days. I've had dresses that were "too nice" to wear to everything that I did, and I ended up wearing it maybe once or twice before it wasn't in style anymore, or it didn't fit correctly. Heartbreaking! Nowadays I try to remember that any day can be special, and if you want to wear your most beautiful dress on a Tuesday you probably should.

Great tips! I still have a lot of clothes to remove from my closet because I simply just don't wear them anymore. I just need to decide who should I donate them to. XD
