jo malone fragrance jo malone perfume jo malone perfume combining jo maone creamWhen it comes to beauty, fragrance is probably the thing I know the least about. I know what I like and what I don’t but not really why and I am absolutely useless at describing scents.

I was told a while ago that Jo Malone fragrances are designed to be layered, that doesn’t mean you can’t wear them all individually but instead that you can makeup something perfect for you by mixing two perfumes together. Since I know very little about fragrance I never gave this a go, I was interested in the concept but too scared to try it myself.

I recently popped into Jo Malone to find out a little more and for my own Fragrance Combining Consolation. Naturally we went through to find the sort of scents that I like but we also spoke about my favourite colour and my happy place. I mentioned that I really loved the new Fragrance Intense Orris and Sandal wood which she recommended I could layer with either Mimosa and Cardamom or Blackberry and Bay. I’m actually not a huge fan of Mimosa & Cardamom but combined with Orris and Sandalwood is the most perfect scent for me.

I ended up picking my favourite combination as Blackberry & Bay with Wood Sage & Sea Salt. The other interesting thing is that you can layer with their Body Cremes too and not just with the actual colognes, I ended up getting Wood Sage & Sea Salt as a Body Creme (although the Cologne is top of my wishlist) which I plan to wear under my Blackberry & Bay Cologne but apparently Mimosa & Cardamom also works well!

I feel like I’ve just added so many new fragrances to my collection just by learning with ones work well layered together, it’s amazing that mixing two fragrances can take an evening fragrance and turn it into a funner day one. I also just discovered the Jo Malone France Combining Tool on their website so I can’t wait to discover which other of my fragrances I can wear together!

I’d highly recommend popping into a Jo Malone store for a Fragrance Combining Consultation which are available in most stores, particularly if you’re after a signature scent, are getting married or just love fragrance!

Have you tried layering fragrance? Which fragrances do you like to layer?

I always find men the hardest to buy for and apart from ties, socks and the occasional watch, I really struggle to choose something. I’ve had a look around and since this is a beauty blog I thought I would share my favourite beauty items that any father would love wether the father of your children or your father.

A family favourite and a gift I have given to almost every man I know is the The Body Shop Maca Root Shaving Cream and Brush. It’s a great stable in any mans life; the brush is great quality, the shaving cream allows for a great shave (so I’ve heard) and the Maca Root range also comes with a face wash. If you’re looking for a fragrance on a budget than The Body White Musk is a great one to look into and I was surprised by just how great it smells with hints of lavender, geranium, musk and sandalwood.

If you are looking for a light summer fragrance that’s still a real man’s man scent than I would go for the John Varvatos Artisan Acqua although it has lots of floral and citrus scents it still remains quite traditionally masculine. Another great one is the Ermenegildo Zegna Uomo which I think is aimed at a slightly older more traditional man but which won’t break the bank as it’s only £18.50 currently in Boots.

If you are looking for skincare then the No7 Men Protect & Perfect Serum especially any man which is beginning to worry about ageing and hydrating. More of an investment but a great one if he’s a gym goer and is looking to really clean his skin to keep blemishes at bay is Clinique For Men Charcoal Wash and Cleansing Brush, it’s one of my favourite brushes, not too harsh but can really change your skin.

If you’re looking for the perfect fragrance for any young man then I would start with Hugo Boss Bottled Intense, Michael Kors For Men or Lacoste L.12.12 Jaune all three are perfect for any stylist, modern father.

The Thierry Mugler’s A* MEN gift set is perfect if you are looking for a little more than just a fragrance as it also comes with a hair & body shampoo but is a really interesting, unusual but beautiful fragrance.

I’ve got my father TABAC After Shave lotion as he doesn’t typically love beauty items but this is so classic and old school that  I think he’ll love it.

I shared my blog post with all my favourites scents for the spring a few months back but I couldn’t help but share some more which have just arrived.

Embarrassingly I managed to lose the lid to Givenchy Very Irresistible Mes Envies but it was probably the one I was most excited to get my hands on. Years ago the original Very Irresistible was my favourite fragrance and even now I can totally see why, it really is beautiful! As you an guess from the floral bow this scent is Rose and Peony based, it does have some sort of citrusy top note but I am useless at working out exactly what it is. If you’ve owned Very Irresistible in the past then I think you’ll really like this, it’s similar but a little more up-to-date version and if you’re just looking for a pretty floral scent which really works all year round then this is one you should consider.

New from Jo Malone is their Bridal Lace Bottle Collection which is available in their ten most loved scent. If you are getting married I think checking out these bottles is an absolute must (and the Jo Malone Wedding Service for help to chose the right fragrance for you) but even if you aren’t getting married these are beautiful collectors bottles. I have Peony & Blush Suede which wears really beautifully, once again quite a floral scent but I get so many compliments when I wear this from everyone although I find it gets better as the day goes on.

Finally another revamp of a favourite is the Stella McCartney Eau De Toilette which I don’t find to be quite as nice as the Eau De Parfum but is a fresher more day time appropriate fragrance. It’s a mixture of Rose and Citrus scents, I’m sure any lover of the original would also love this one, great perfume for spring/summer. I think this will probably be the day time fragrance I take on holiday with me in July.

I received another fragrance yesterday which arrived to late for this post but it is amazing and I will share with you very soon!

The most recent fragrance to my collection is Jo Malone’s Sakura Cherry Blossom Cologne which has arrived just in time for spring. It is one of their Blue Skies and Blossom fragrances which has two other scents also based around blossoms. They are all light, floral and perfect for spring.

Although floral scents are very popular they are also not everyone favourite but this is a very demure delicate scent blended with notes of rose and bergamot (probably which I love it so much) and very easy to wear.

Although this scent is beautiful my favourite from the Blue Skies and Blossom collection is probably Osmanthus Blossom with notes of petigrain, apricot and peach but all three are stunning and perfect for this time of year.

Like all the Jo Malone Fragrances this collection comes in a beautiful gift box. It is out now and each 100ml bottle is £86 and is limited edition so if you are looking for a new spring fragrance check these out soon!

Now that I have my first Jo Malone fragrance I already have my eye on Pomegranate Noir as well as Peony & Blush Suede.

The launch of new products for spring has been pretty impressive and I’m struggling to keep up, last week I spoke about some of my favourite lipstick launches and I thought today we would look at some of my favourite fragrances.

I love the idea of changing my fragrance for spring and summer, usually opting for something a little lighter, sweeter or more floral. Although celebrity fragrances typically have a bad reputation the Taylor Swift Incredible Things perfume, £23 doesn’t have the typical celebrity fragrance scent. It is a really beautiful day time option which has notes of vanilla, musk, pink pepper and grapefruit. Although it is initially quite a sweet scent it develops into more of a musky vanilla and isn’t as young as it sounds, probably one of my favourite celebrity fragrances which I will be wearing this spring.

Another great inexpensive option are the new DKNY fragrances, I have already spoken about the DKNY Delicious Delights range but they have also released their yearly Women’s Limited Edition fragrance (£41, exclusive to Superdrugs). Admittedly I hate the long bottle as it isn’t the easiest to store but the fuse of sweet orange, grapefuit, vanila and patchouli make it a really wearable fragrance.

One of my all time favourite perfume range is the Juicy Couture one, I love the tacky bottle and they just all smell so incredible and the new Hollywood Royal, £35 is no different. More of a evening spring/summer scent it maintain the usual florally sweet notes and I think you can really smell the marshmallow, candy apple, vanilla and jasmine notes.

If you are a fan of Burberry Brit Rhythm then you are probably excited to hear about the launch of Burberry Brit Rhythm Floral, £50 which is a floral fragrance enriched with citrus fruit. Although you can definitely smell the floral scents I find this to be a very lemon and orange based fragrance. It is really perfect for day time in the spring and very understatedly sexy.

New from L’Occitane is Iris Bleu & Iris Blanc £52 which is unlike any of the other fragrances I have in this post. It is grown up but not at all in an old-lady overly floral way (I’m awful at descibribing fragrances), it is a mixture of blue iris floral water and white iris which notes of citrus, peach and musk. Quite unique in my opinion, not something I would typically go for but actually really pretty, especially as it’s unlike what my friends usually go for.

Two brands which I have never owned perfumes from are Thomas Sabo and Marni. Thomas Sabo has released a perfect summer fragrance called Charm Rose Beach, £44.95 which goes with it’s recent charm collection, as the name would suggest the scent is very much sea inspired with notes of mandarin, bergamot, musk and spicy cedar. From Marni they have launched Marni Spice, £49 which although may not be for everyone is a great spicy fragrance with cinnamon, black and pink pepper with a range of floral notes too perfect for the evening.

Diptyque Florabellio, £58 launches in April 2015, providing floral harmony refreshed with salty sea aromas. This unisex fragrance also includes notes of apple blossom, roasted coffee and toasted sesame. I think this would be the perfect holiday perfume and would work just as well for your partner.

I hope you enjoyed this blog post, I know that fragrances aren’t quite the easiest thing to read about and imagine.
