Since it’s January and most of us have spent most of our money on Christmas Presents and January sales I thought I would share my favourite affordable way of spending an evening, hiding from the cold.
Having a movie night in is something I do quite often; usually with my boyfriend, sometime with my friends and family or by myself. My favourite time to do it however has to be winter, when it’s cold outside and I don’t want to leave the house so here are my tips…
Choosing the movie
Probably the most important choice you’ll have to make for this movie night. You can watch an old classic or a new film but keep the audience in mind- you might be watching it alone, with your partner, family or friends so bare in mind their age and taste.
If you don’t want to buy a DVD then I’ve heard NowTV (alternative to Amazon Instant & NetFlix) is great and you subscribe a month meaning you can watch lots of movie meaning lots of movie nights! iTunes also sell and rent movies or if you don’t want to spend money on the movie have a look at the TV guide for what’s going to be on soon. Alternatively go for a series and you can make the movie night a weekly thing.
I’ve watched far too many films this Christmas, from the ones I’ve recently watched I would recommend; About Time, This Means War, What’s Your Number?, Playing it Cool, The Last Son and Third Person.
Food and drink
Popcorn is a classic but I personally love nachos, since it’s just after Christmas & New Year also use any left over chocolate, Biscuits, sweets, drinks and other snacks. If you’re look for something a bit bigger than just snacks I think Pizza is the best option. If you’re having friends over (and your over 18) than cocktails and wine always go down well.
Keep it comfy
I’m talking lots of pillows, cushion. throws, bean bags and I personally love a good hot water bottle. If you don’t have enough for everyone than ask a friend to bring some.
Make sure it’s dark
For me this is one of the most important factors which is why I would usually recommend an evening Movie Day. Draw all the blinds, close the curtains and make sure everyone turns their phone off.
If you’re pushing the boat out and planning ahead than a dress code can be super fun, go for pyjamas if you want to keep it casual or you can even dress up as the characters from the film you’re planning to watch.
What are your favourite things about a movie night in? Have you got any film recommendations?
This kind of night sounds perfect right now!

I love movie nights, especially in the winter too! We just got a ton of snow and now I am fighting to get out of the holiday spirit, so am currently watching "The Holiday" and eating popcorn sprinkled with raisinets! Lovely post!

Love this post, movie nights are my favourite! I would much rather get all cosy on the couch with a film than go out clubbing, haha 🙂 x
Cloudy Coconut
Sounds like such a perfect night! I love to make a hot chocolate, put on some fairylights and then watch my favourite films (normally Harry Potter!) x

I love doing this with my husband 🙂 My best friend gave us a 'movie night kit' she put together for Christmas, with a few DVDs, a gorgeous fluffy blanket from Next and a gift bag full of snacks. I thought it was a really thoughtful gift actually, I might use the idea for future present buying! The notebook is one of my favourite films ever! Sometimes we watch girly films like Bridget Jones and Dirty Dancing and other times I'll watch more of a 'manly' action film with him to keep it fair. He secretly loves some of the girly ones though lol.
